I’m jealous of Job

Yeah you’re right. The portion of Job’s life outlined in Job sucks. It really does. I can’t be really jealous of what happened to him, it’s truly a sad story, and in this thanksgiving season I thank God for what he blessed me with. What I’m truly jealous of is this.

“And the LORD said to Satan, ‘Have you considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, who fears God and turns away from evil?’ Then Satan answered the LORD and said, ‘Does Job fear God for no reason? Have you not put a hedge around him and his house and all that he has, on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land. But stretch out your hand and touch all that he has, and he will curse you to your face.’ And the LORD said to Satan, ‘Behold, all that he has is in your hand. Only against him do not stretch out your hand.’ So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD.”
- Job 1:6-12

Now imagine this scene where the LORD is talking to Satan saying, “Hey check out my servant Job. He’s awesome and his faith in me can not be shaken. There’s no one like him.”

Satan in turn replies, “It’s because you poured out your blessings on him. He loves your blessings not you. Take those away and he’ll be just like everyone else.”

The LORD says, “You have no idea. Fine, test him. Take everything and see if he still loves me or not.”

The significance is this: The Lord trusted Job to stand firm in the face of such adversity. Satan provoked God and God chose Job to fight this one. He has the mindset towards Job, “I know you can handle this one. You won’t fail me.”

I don’t know if God could say that about me.

I want to be one that not only relies on God, but someone God could rely on - a characteristic of Job I envy and want to make my own.
